INTERNATIONAL PROJECTS

AFRICA

KENYA

Soweto AIDS Orphans

One of the devastating results of the AIDS epidemic in Kenya is the rising number of orphaned children.  We support a program in Soweto, an urban slum outside of Nairobi, that assists both the children who have lost their parents to this horrific disease and their caregivers as well.

Maasai Alternative Rite of Passage

We support the eradication of the practice of FGM (female genital mutilation) in Kenya's rural areas.  In the summer of 2004 and 2008, a WOMEN OF VISION team traveled to Kenya to participate in an alternative rite of passage ceremony for Maasai girls  This is extraordinary because it provides the girls an opportunity to say "no" to the traditional Maasai girls' circumcision ceremony and to say "yes" to continuing their education.

Democratic Republic of Congo

Women of Congo, Stand Up Together - Women of Vision is standing together with Congolese women who have been devastated by rape and sexal violence.  Stand Up Together will seek to povide solutions for the future of these women.

SUDAN, DARFUR REGION

Refugees in Crisis Program

The vicious ongoing fighting between the Sudanese government and rebel forces has created an unbearable living situation for hundreds of thousands of people living in the Darfur region.  Survivors have fled to refugee camps, where we are currently providing emergency relief funding through World Vision for those in greatest need.

JERUSALEM/WEST BANK/GAZA

Nusseirat - Al-Mijed Women's Association

Many families have been devastated by the violence of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, and each day brings renewed uncertainty.  We support the Al-Mijed Women's Association, a group of productive, inventive women who promote economic independence, healing, and emotional support for women and families through micro-enterprise projects and after-school opportunities for students in Gaza.

Atfaluna School for the Deaf

Genetic disorders, disease, and the inability to afford basic health care have contributed to deafness in nearly twenty thousand Palestinians.  Deaf children are seen as liabilities and are rarely given training in any skills, causing frustration and behavioral problems.  We support the world-class Atfaluna School for the Deaf in Gaza, where children and their families receive specialized help, training, and loving care.

Bethleham Child Guidance and Training Center

Counseling, guidance and psychiatric services are provided for children and adults at the Guidance and Training Center in Bethlehem.  We support this haven of help where people with post-tramatic stress disorder and psychological difficulities associated with the on-going violence receive professional care.

Holy Family Care Center/ Sister Rose's Counseling Center

We support Sister Rose's Holy Family Care Center for children who have been tramatized by war-related circumstances and are unable to attend regular school.  With individualized and loving care, many recover and are able to be mainstreamed back into the educational system.  The dedicated staff works wonders with these children and their families, bringing back hope and joy into their lives.

Lazarus Home for Girls

Palestinian children in Jerusalem/West Bank/Gaza suffer from the effects of living in constant turmoil.  We support the Lazarus Home for Girls, a safe haven for Palestinian girls in distress from being orphaned or abandoned.  The home provides 35 girls between the ages of three to eighteen with nourishing meals, educational and recreational activities, clothing, shelter, medical care and protection in a loving environment.  Samar Suhar, the "mother hen," and her helpers work tirelessly to give these girls a chance at life.

MEXICO/BAJA CALIFORNIA

Ninos de Calle
Mexico City

WORLD VISION'S Ninos de Calle (Children in Crisis) project helps reclaim the lives of thousands of children living on the streets of Mexico City.  The objective is to reintegrate these vulnerable children into their natural families, give them educational and technical skills to enable them to find work, or provide alternative forms of permanent care.  This is accomplished by ministering to their physical, emotional, social, intellectual, and spiritual needs. Tijuana Area Development Project, Baja California

Just across the United States-Mexico border, on the outskirts of Tijuana, thousands of children and families live in deplorable conditions where they lack safe water and sanitation facilities.  Many are undernourished, jobs are scarce, education is substandard, and poverty is chronic and often extreme.  Together with World Vision, Women of Vision Orange County and its Junior group are partnering in a new project with communities surrounding Tijuana to help finish a community center building which will house a beauty school as well as provide vocational training, health care, and other educational and economic opportunities for the adults along with education and protection of the children of the community. Community members themselves will provide all of the labor for this project and will partner with us in making other improvements.
